This album is, as the cliche' goes, a "grower". That doesn't mean you listen to it in full 6 times in a row and expect it to makes sense instantly - that's naive! Yes it only goes for 40 minutes, but it's a memorable 40 minutes.
HERE GOES:
Music Was Saved is cool - probably the most instantly likeable track on the album for it's fast paced catchiness...
Fidelity is melodious, subtle and brilliant all at the same time. James says he didn't want to labour the point on any track and I presume that's why this track is so short that it leaves you wanting another verse, a bridge or something. Just as you're getting into it, it ends.
Some of us is an absolute cracker. It's chorus is an anthem that will stick in your head forever! It has been simplified since it's live days where the lyrics were constantly tinkered with by James, and it works deliciously well.
The only disappointment is Silence is Easy - this track was excellent live @ PinkPop - very raw a rocky, whereas the album version is somewhat sterile and boring. Frickin Spector.
Telling Them is a soundtrack full of sweeping strings, quite different to anything previously released by the band, but indicative of the new direction on this album. It's not rock'n'roll, but it rocks!
Shark Food is a simple mantra with two sets of two lines that forces you to sing along to. Apparently this is a new favourite at gigs. The song isn't brilliant because it leaves you wanting more (a little like Fidelity), but it's great nonetheless.
Bring My Love is another soundtrack-like track, unusual but very catchy. There is something very 60s-70's about it. A very open love song, this track will remind you of rolling hills, sunlight and skipping around like a love-sick soul. Great Fun!
White Dove is beautiful. It's James at his most sensitive. The lyrics are charming and uplifting. Listen to his voice when he sings 'I'm leading the blind', - it's very honest. A real melter.
Starsailor visit funkytown in Four to the Floor - it's Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive meets Stel's phat and groovy bass, Barry's cheeky, bopping ivory and a bit bongo solo from Ben! This will be a belter live!
Born Again is a track that you just don't want to end - it's got more hooks than a fisherman's tacklebox! If this song, listened to loud and properly, doesn't make you're spine tingle, then you are spineless! Triumphant stuff!
James is obviously a happier man these days, the new album aches less than it predecessor; it's simpler, breezier. It might not grab you straight away, but it will grab you.
Now to get them to Australia.... |

That was a pretty good anaylsis of the album. Although I wonder why you left out Restless Heart? That is an amazing track.
And YES. James is definitely a happier man, cuz there's very little aching going on in this album (which I was kind of looking forward to, but hey, I still have Love is Here! )
Anyways. Keep up the good work, you good souls

My Apologies for not posting a review on the last track!
RESTLESS HEART is James at his most vulnerable and most beautiful. It is the perfect close to the album and would make a great final song at a gig... I can just hear the crowd singing this anthem, no musical backing required. James still aches a little, after all! |
