I like the new album , i really do.

Its just...well i was tlaking to one of my friends, Starsailor came up in conversation and comparisons were made between first and second albums...i htink they phrase we agreed on was 'its good, its just not...y'know?!'

To me, the raw and newness of Love is here was part of the appeal, Silence is easy sounds as thought it has been made where it was, in a studio, not in a lunch break, desperately trying to pile all this inspiration and drive into a track, in someones bedroom.

(and yes i am aware that's not how Love is here was made)

I'm petrified that Starsailor are going to have to be filled under the 'fantastic first album then not so fantastic' section of my record collection along with Travis and Stereophonics.

Any comments or response to this? Is there something i can do to re-discover the passion with which i once adored them?!

I felt exactly as you, when I first heard the album, I didn't feel it had the energy and rawness I loved on Love Is Here. But it's more of a grower and the longer I live with it, the more I love it. I was sent the album earlier in the year to hear and was aasked for my feelings on it and this is a slightly edited copy of the e-mail I sent back to the band and record label with my comments. When I say edited, I have only removed some personal references that weren't for public consumption in this version, this is exactly what I told them at the time. http://www.goodsouls.org.uk/silence.html

I was going to say about their live versions of the songs, but was so distracted by watching Buddy Guy play the guitar one-handed on Later I forgot what I was doing.

As Megan says, their live performances at the moment are so energetic and passionate, you can be assured that what made us fall in love with their music with Love Is Here is well and truly still there and has only been built upon. They are simply growing up - they were very young and inexperienced when they made the first album and their skills and technique are improving over time. When you look at what they've done and achieved since they recorded it in the summer of 2001, it's little wonder that their style has changed to reflect significant changes in them. You'd be worried if it didn't. In another thread elsewhere people are complaining that the Strokes haven't moved on with their second album.

See what they do with three of the Silence Is Easy tracks on Later next Friday and see if that re-kindles the flame for you.

There's some live footage at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onebigweekend/2003/cardiff/video.shtml of the One Big Weekend performance for Radio 1 at Cardiff and a live session they did for XFM at http://www.xfm.co.uk/article.asp?id=13661
