I was right in front of James with my girlfriend in my arms and I absolutely had a blast.

the songs were amazing. I was so happy to hear Telling Them but unfortunately Some Os Us wasnt part of the setlist.

James improved a lot on lead guitar. great leads on Love Is Here and couple of other ones.
and James had some cool dances on 3 or 4 songs which was really funny Smile
only 14 songs with 2 acoustic covers that became one and a half because on the first one James forgot the chords in the middle.

James had a hard time with his voice on Fever and Lullaby. but anyway he was top on all the others.

there was no cds to buy at the gig though.
even though it is already released here in Canada.

the 2 Canadian bonus tracks (as it's written on the cd-the first time there is "Canadian" bonus tracks=-thank you! Razz ) are
Could You Be Mine?
At The End Of The Show.

I thought James would play a longer acoustic set though.

anyways, he's been talking with us a lot and seemed to enjoy himself. - I hope-

plus it was sold out so it was a good thing for all of us.

Stel looked f*****g drunk and was doing some few dumbass moves. he really got on my nerves at some point. and compared to the dvd, he wasnt that good. he got 3 or 4 times the wrong note and he really was in James Walsh's shadow - even more than he ever.

Ben seemed to be as drunk, but at least he showed a lot of intensity.
and Barry, well, as shy as usual.

so overall it was an excellent gig, the place was full, and the songs were amazing.

and even though Stel seemed to be "hey I play bass in a great band from the UK so I'll get drunk and be a f*****g fool if I want",
everything else was fantastic.

and I wont tell you what James said about Montreal compared with Toronto. Cool

JAMES WALSH -

CHEERS MAN.

I don't think any of them were drunk. Stel was goofing around, but better that than standing around looking bored. Perhaps you couldn't see from where you were standing, but a lot of the "dumbass moves" I think you refer to were done in irony. More of a shared joke between Stel and Ben, or with the roadies than anything else. I don't think a few miss hit notes are that indicitive. James screwed up Fever, so Stel was hardly the only one who wasn't perfect. Ben didn't seem drunk to me either.

I believe James said "we had a great time in Toronto but we had an even better time in Montreal." Which was true enough, the venue was better (smaller, nice layout and design), the crowd more enthusiastic, and there wasn't a time crunch on them. Although the Montreal set wasn't much longer than the one in Toronto anyhow.

The setlist was the same except for the covers which were both different. I didn't recognise any of them.

I've been thinking about this since your post last night tob because I chose not to answer in haste, but when I consider my personal experience of them at gigs and public appearances and their preparation for them and their attitude to their work and especially when I spoke to Stel a few days before they flew to the US and his comments then, I really don't think Stel's attitude will have been intended as you perceived it. I mentioned your comments over breakfast to my boys and they both commented that it just didn't sound like Stel.

He was really looking forward to the tour and couldn't wait to get playing again and had spent a lot of time over his Christmas break with his bass, practicing, he felt he'd got sloppy with all the recent live dates at which it's easy to form lazy playing habits and he wanted to tighten up his technique before the tour. After each gig when I've spoken to him, he's been incredibly critical of his and the overall peformance and always comments on bits he think they can tighten and what needs work - as do all of them, there's always a post-gig post mortem by all the team - the only gig I've been at where they were seemingly satisfied was ULU and I believe Brixton in October got a similar reaction.

Having stood amongst them on a stage during a sound check, I've seen first hand the care that they each personally and the crew put into making it the best performance they can - nothing is left to chance and they really latch onto getting details right - even the NME photographer who was with me commented that it was the most thorough sound check he'd seen in a long while. And whilst I've seen them drink on stage, I've personally never seen them drink before a performance and certainly not step onto the stage drunk - they're actually pretty nervous beforehand.

I know this will attract derision as another sycophantic and defensive post, but if I thought for one minute they'd developed an arrogant attitude towards fans who'd paid for and gone to immense trouble that some have on this tour, of seeing a live performance, they'd soon be in receipt of my resignation. I resigned an 8 year and very enjoyable relationship with another band for exactly that reason last summer and I'll do the same again. The very day I wake up and no longer have faith in Starsailor and feel completely comfortable in representing them, they'll get my resignation.

I hope on Sunday night they were just having a whale of a time, they were certainly looking forward to it. Laughing And if he was drunk and behaving inappropriately, he'll have me to answer to! Twisted Evil

becky - ah maybe it was just a "hey you're town is the best" thing to make scream the crowd so loud, but he did say Toronto was great, don't worry Smile

and boo : yeah I've been thinking a lot of my words on Stel.

I don't know what to write, really. I said what I said cos it was the way I was feeling at the moment.
when John Rice was doing his set I was so happy to see Stel on the side of the stage (yeah-he was drinking Laughing ).
all the show I thought he was funny. but at the end he was a bit weird, always turning his back to the crowd and doing some little dumb moves around. - don't get me wrong , I was right in front of James, about one meter from him- and if Stel wasnt drunk, well I wasnt enjoying myself.
and I was enjoying myself.
and believe me, when I'll play gigs, I'll be drunk sometimes. I know this. and I'll probably act as a f*****g fool cos I'll feel everybody's looking at me and it's hard to act in a "normal" way in those times.

"with all the recent live dates at which it's easy to form lazy playing habits and he wanted to tighten up his technique before the tour."

yeah it's true. maybe he was just enjoying himself A LOT and I just felt like he was just bored. you know, cos awhen someones acting like you never saw him before, it can one of 2 extremes - bored as damn or just enjoying himslef a lot.

cos with the starsailor gigs I saw on the net (and on the dvd) I never saw Stel acting this way. and if we made him act this way cos he was enjoying himself a lot, then it's all good Smile

anyways, thanks boo, your words were really nice and thank you for taking the time to answer me.

I wanted to tell James that they were better than Oasis now, but I just didnt want him to think about them!! Laughing

that was an excellent night. I hope they'll come back soon.
was it sold out at most of the places they played?

anyways, have a great day, everyone Smile

cheers

I just bought their last album and I couldn't wait to see their show. I enjoyed it. I was near the stage and I saw everything. James was perfect. Ok, he had troubles with one of his songs, but who cares? Everything else was perfect. I had a great time. At the end, I just didn't want to leave. I hope they'll come back in Montreal soon.

P.S. English is not my mother thongue, so if I make any mistake, please forgive me.

At those times he and Ben were having a laugh together. That's what I meant when I said you might not have been able to see from where you were standing. Stel would turn to Ben, wait until he had his attention and then do something goofy at which point both would have a laugh. There were 3 bottles in front of him by the end of the night, but after seeing Alun from the Delgados drink most of a bottle of wine almost single handedly, I never underestimate the British capacity for alcohol. The Delgados put on a really good show regardless, and having also seen the Strokes in a small club I can tell you what a bad drunken show is like.

On a random note, I remembered today that James mentioned that one of the covers was a Leonard Cohen song.

Oh and from what I heard, the band may be back in March.

hsy just lurking (great name by the way Wink)

I know that Johnathan Rice covered a Leonard Cohen song -it was f*****g brilliant- the best song of his set.
dont know about James.

hey mate I was right in front of James - one meter - I just had my girlfriend in my arms who separated us. I've talked to James at the beginning of the gig and he told the crowd "sorry it's just between him and I". anyways, I remember during Fever he went walking in Ben's direction and yeah, it was to have a laugh.

I dont know what made me see something wrong. maybe the fact I knew after the gig it would be my last night with my girlfriend (cos she's going back to college) wasnt getting me in a very happy mood.

the band may be back in March? that's mega Cool

cheers

Thanks. Was it Rice who had the Cohen song? My memory is shot. I do remember one of the covers having the line "a song for you and me." I'll try and figure it out later tonight.

I think my friend was beside you at the show. She said she couldn't get good pictures of Ben so I thought the angle might be wrong for you. I was right at the side so I could see Stel's face even when he was facing Ben.
