I actually met him once... only breifly
as the advert for 24 Hour Party people said

he was but in the best possible way...
came down gave a talk to a load of bands who where trying to make it, gave so many tips and general advice - asked if he ever regretted anything - it was turning down 1 band who became really big (can't remember who it was now) and the one thing he always stuck to was "never sign a band with their own back drop, they should be thinking about music not how they look!"
he took a load of CD's from all the bands - threw them in the back of his Jag, dunno if any ever got listened to...

Manchester has lost one of it's famous sons.

He was a genunine bloke.

Without him, there wouldn't of been The Hacienda and Factory Records

May he now rest in peace..............

Mr Wilson believed in the potential of my fave band. He even tried to start a new label around them. But, for some reason, it didn't work Sad . I know he had been very disappointed by this, but he had kept a special link with them.

After John Peel, arguably the one of most important men in the music scene of the last 30 years.
The first man to put the Sex Pistols on TV, and champion of many other great bands.
The band he always regretted not signing was The Smiths.

Hi Sid, how the heck are you?

I thought I'd replied to this already, but don't appear to have.

Whilst I personally found that his personality grated a little, I did have huge respect for him - and it's clear that the industry did. His achievements and influence are a matter of record and he was a great ambassador for Manchester - a place he clearly loved and had great passion for.

He was on the regional (Manchester based) news whilst we were on holiday in July, fighting for the rights of other cancer sufferers to have a drug he was approved to receive, but refused to take on the NHS if others couldn't have it too - friends and bands paid for his treatment privately. He really didn't look well and we both felt he was perhaps losing his battle.

I was genuinely sad to hear of his death. He still had work to do. Wherever he is, I hope he's giving them a hard time.

I'm ok Boo, hope you are well.

Tony was a colourful and opinionated character that seemed to be loved and hated equally, especially by the people of Manchester.
